Brigadeiros (Brazilian Chocolate Truffles)

I’m currently listening to Gwen Stefani’s Christmas album (it’s so good!) while watching the snow fall outside my window, have a yummy coffee candle burning and the heat is on full blast. I think winter has finally set in, it’s snowed about 2 inches in the last 3 hours and I’m already ready for it to be spring. I’ve been soaking in all things Christmas lately and even went to a cookie exchange party last night . As usual everyone brought so many yummy and fun treats, I love to see what everyone comes up with, and we each got to take some home. This year for the cookie exchange I decided to make these melt in your mouth dairy-free “Brigadeiros”, they’re little Brazilian Truffles. If you haven’t had them before, go buy these ingredients immediately and make yourself a batch. They’re rich, chocolatey, smooth, creamy and dangerously easy to eat 10 without thinking!  They are scrumptious and the perfect treat to bring to a celebration or give as a holiday gift. To make Brigadeiros dairy-free I substituted sweetened condensed milk for sweetened condensed coconut milk and dairy-free butter and they turned out perfect, maybe better than the traditional recipe (that may be something I’m telling myself a lot lately as I substitute dairy-free foods instead of the real thing) but I promise these are insanely good. They really are melt in your mouth chocolate truffles and I had so much trouble making sure I didn’t eat too many so I would have some left to bring to the party. If you make a batch make sure you have enough left for yourself, because there’s no denying you’ll love them, especially if you’re a chocolate person like I am! Brigadeiros are normally rolled in chocolate sprinkles, but I decided to make some of them extra festive for Christmas and rolled them in crushed candy canes – a combination that was delicious and Santa approved. Besides being irresistible, these Brigadeiros only have 5 ingredients and are a cinch to make. You’ll combine the cocoa powder, butter, pinch of salt and condensed milk in a saucepan, melt together and let it cook down until it’s the consistency of pudding. While the mixture cools you can crush up your candy canes if you decide to use them. Once the mixture is cooled, it gets scooped and rolled into balls, then rolled in your topping of choice and then gobbled up! These would even be a fun alternative to cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve. I hope this recipe brings you some Christmas cheer this holiday season and you’ll give them a try.

Dairy-free Brazilian Brigadeiros - festive chocolate truffles perfect for any celebration!

Ingredients

  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed coconut milk or sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon Earth Balance Buttery Spread or regular salted butter
  • pinch of salt
  • chocolate sprinkles, or crushed candy canes

Directions

Combine the sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, butter and pinch of salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. When the 10 minutes is up, it will be thick like chocolate pudding. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

Once the mixture is cooled, scoop the mixture out into small balls about 3/4 inch in size and roll in your hands into small balls. Roll each ball in sprinkles, crushed candy canes or your topping of choice. Chill before serving.

  • I found the Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk in the organic section of my grocery store’s baking section.
  • I listed Earth Balance Butter Spread as the butter substitute because it cooks well and has a great buttery taste.
  • You can use any toppings you’d like to roll the Brigadeiros in like chopped nuts, different color sprinkles, coconut flakes, etc.
