Huckleberry Margarita

When we were in McCall over the summer, I had the BEST margarita while we enjoyed a little day date at the Shore Lodge.  Yes, I’m still reminiscing over our summer with it feeling like a distant memory as our first football game approaches in 5 days. #govandals 🙂 The Shore Lodge has the most beautiful patio where you can sit right on the water under white umbrellas and feel the warm summer breeze, watch everyone playing on Payette Lake and take in the gorgeous view of the mountains. If we could both choose our top favorite place to relax and have drinks this is the spot. This was the first time I ordered their Huckleberry Margarita and it was everything I was hoping for and more. It was so refreshing and may have gone down a little too easily, but I kept my cool and only got the giggles a couple times while we grocery shopped afterwards. There’s nothing more fun than having a good time with your spouse while doing the most simple of things. Processed with VSCO with hb1 presetAnyways, enough about me over indulging during summer break let’s get to these margaritas.  They have fresh muddled huckleberries in them which adds a sweet tartness that is the perfect compliment to the usual suspects in a margarita – fresh lime juice, tequila and orange liqueur.  If you’re not familiar with huckleberries, I wasn’t until we moved to ID, they look like a smaller more reddish-blue blueberry and taste like a mix between a blueberry and a tart blackberry. They’re only ripe here in mid-late summer, so when I can order something with them in it I do because they’re just like summer sweet, yet fleeting.  When we got home from our trip I wanted to recreate these Huckleberry Margaritas so I could continue on with my vacation mindset. I picked up some huckleberries at our local co-op and made myself the perfect Huckleberry Margarita to enjoy until the leaves start to change and I can’t find huckleberries again until next summer. If you have access to huckleberries I hope you give this Huckleberry Margarita recipe a try, if you don’t try a mix of blueberries and blackberries for a similar yet original berry margarita combination to keep that summer alive just a little bit longer!

A refreshing Huckleberry Margarita for an endless summer.

Inspired by the Huckleberry Margaritas from the Shore Lodge in McCall, ID.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • about a 1/4 of a lime’s zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh huckleberries
  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur
  • 1 ounce agave nectar
  • 1 ounce lime juice

Directions

Zest about 1/4 of a lime onto a plate and add the salt to it. Mix until the lime zest is evenly distributed.

Cut out a wedge from the lime and use it to rim the glass with lime juice. Turn the glass upside down into the salt to get a salted/zested rim.

Next add the huckleberries to the glass and muddle to release the juices and create a jam like consistency, you don’t want to pulverize the huckleberries. Next pour in the tequila, orange liqueur, agave nectar and lime juice. Give it a good stir, add ice and enjoy!

  • If you can’t find huckleberries you could try a combination of blueberries and blackberries for a similar flavor.
  • If you like using a drink shaker, I recommend muddling the huckleberries in the glass first, then pouring the shaken drink over top so the huckleberries don’t get stuck in the shaker.
